Students learn IT, software, web design at high school in Manhattan

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's technical, creative, and interactive. Welcome to the Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology in Hell's Kitchen. It's been open since 2011, and all 365 students work on a laptops.

Not only are they studying for the Regents exams, students are getting technology certifications.

"We take a test that gives us an A plus certification so I can apply for a job right away," says Christopher Camilo, a 10th grader.

The school has three pathways: information technology, software engineering, and digital design.

"All of these basics they're learning will help them with an eye for photography, fashion design," says Tymond Tran, a 10th grade digital design teacher.

In Thomas Bijesse's class, ninth graders are learning how to write code and make their own websites.

"Learning HTML is a skill that's becoming more relevant for them moving into college, to the work world," Bijesse says.

Principal April McKoy says the school also focuses on workplace experience.

"They're placed in internships in junior and senior year but in 9th grade they start with our industry partners like HSS, Goldman Sachs and other partners," she says.

That helps makes them college and industry ready, in the growing field of technology.

To give you an idea of the popularity here, more than 1,400 students applied to be incoming freshman. 2015 is going to be a big year for this school as the first senior class will graduate.
