Gov. Quinn still taking heat for anti-violence program spending

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Governor Pat Quinn was at the Field Museum Saturday honoring Hillary Clinton with the Order of Lincoln, Illinois' highest award. Early Saturday he presented the same honor to Mike Krzyzewski, 'Coach K' of the Duke University Basketball team.

“Not only have you made the world a better place, you've made Abraham Lincoln proud,” said Quinn.

At both events, the governor declined to take questions from reporters, just as he did Saturday morning when he helped commemorate Polish Constitution Day. His Republican opponent, Bruce Rauner, Saturday pointed to the expanding state and federal investigations of the governor’s 'Neighborhood Recovery Initiative' as evidence of the need for change.

“It looks like there's been misspending, corruption, patronage, political shenanigans slush funds, maybe throughout, not just in the neighborhood recovery initiative,” said Rauner.

Investigators are focusing on whether portions of the 55-million dollar program were spent for political gain in the weeks before the 2010 election. The governor said Friday he's handled the problems.

“I shut down the program. I abolished the agency that was supposed to provide oversight, and we moved on,” added Quinn.

The Sun-Times recently revealed that oversight for some of those dollars was handled by Benton Cook, the husband of Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown. She defended her husband Saturday.

“My husband is a great man who works hard every day; working for the community, working for young people…and so it’s unfortunate, but we are going to stand strong as we always do, and we're going to continue to support the community,” said Brown.
