CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Four men were shot — one fatally — early Sunday in the River North neighborhood, police said.

The group was standing in a cul-de-sac in the 500 block of West Erie Street at 3:10 a.m. when people in a dark-colored sedan driving past flashed gang signs before opening fire, police said.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the head and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he later died, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the death.

An 18-year-old man shot in the left shoulder and a 19-year-old man shot in the right foot were taken to Stroger Hospital. Another 20-year-old man went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to the left arm and torso. All were listed in “stable” condition, police said.

Police said all four victims are documented gang members.

A resident who lives in a building near the scene said his wife was woken up by the sound of gunshots.

Another man who said he lives nearby said he was “sound asleep” when he heard what sounded like several firecrackers. He then heard sirens and people screaming at Erie Cafe, 536 W. Erie St.

No one is in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.
