Don't fall for this IRS phone scam

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A metro Detroit family says they were targeted by an IRS phone scam, and are sharing their story to warn others.

A woman, who wished to remain unidentified, tells FOX 2's Amy Lange she received a phone call from a person claiming to be an IRS agent. He left a message demanding his call be returned.

The family called back, and was told they committed fraud against the IRS and owed nearly $6,000. The family said they don't have the money, and were then told police would come later that day to arrest them if they did not pay.

Then, the family received a phone call from a person claiming to be from the Ingham County Sheriff's Office. The phone call even had police sirens going off in the background.

The family eventually determined the calls to be fraudulent, and West Bloomfield Police Lt. Curt Lawson.

"This seems like an organized group. When they call you, it does seem like it's legitimate - but it is not. The IRS is not going to call you over the phone. They may mail you something; they may show up in person with proper credentials. And even if someone does show up, if you have any doubt it's the IRS contact your local police department," he says.

He says the police department is currently investigating 12 complaints related to IRS issues, and that three thousand IRS investigators are looking into 20,000 complaints already received this year.
