These paws paint -- for charity

It's original artwork, definitely abstract, with a hint of impressionism. Only this artist works for dog treats.

His name is Brody. He's a 6-year-old Border Collie who knows more than 200 tricks, including how to paint.

Lisa Morrissey of Hudson spotted his photo on five years ago and fell for him on the spot.

"He had this little tilt in his head, his ears were perked up, and I thought he looked like the coolest dog in the world," she recalled.

Picked up as a stray by Manatee County Animal Services and rescued by Skyway Border Collie Rescue, Morrissey says Brody was frightened and timid at first. A certified tricks trainer, she started teaching him tricks to build his confidence and channel his boundless energy.

"He seemed to need something to do, so I started teaching him complex tricks," she continued.

Brody's a pro at basketball. He dunks it on command, even hanging on the rim like the NBA stars.

He can honk a horn, ring a bell, open and close drawers -- you name it.

But Morrissey says his absolute favorite is painting.

"It took probably five weeks to teach him to paint. Once he learned, we have to do it every night before he goes to bed!"

And it's not just for fun. Eight of Brody's paintings have been sold to raise money for charity.

A Brody original, in collaboration with Koby, the painting dog in Oregon, raised $122 for the Children's Cancer Association. Another painting raised nearly that amount for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

Morrissey says it's only fitting that Brody should be using his talent for charity.

"I feel Brody should 'paw it forward.' He's got a nice, happy home now and he should do something to help out animals that don't have a home."
