Update: Mich. woman, 20, choosing preventative double mastectomy

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - Fox 2 is learning new information about 20-year-old Kelly Rothe, the youngest patient at Beaumont Hospital to undergo a preventative double mastectomy.

A spokesperson from Beaumont Hospital says Rothe went into surgery at 8 a.m. Friday.

"She was in great spirits and said she has been overwhelmed by all the support she has received. She said she feels confident and ready, " says Mark Geary, Beaumont Media Relations Coordinator.

Rothe has the BRCA1 gene, which means her lifetime risk of breast cancer is 87%.

Her mother and aunt both died from breast cancer.

The recommended age to do surgery is 30, but Rothe didn't want to wait.

Beaumont Breast Oncologist Dr. Nayana Dekhne gave Rothe options, saying at her age her risk for breast cancer is very low but Rothe was persistent and believes her mom would be proud of her choice.
