Trapped diabetic woman spends night in doctor's office bathroom

Posted: Updated:

A diabetic woman spent hours trapped inside a bathroom at her doctor's office after it closed and she couldn't escape.

Connie Mickey said she went to JSA Medical Group on Wednesday afternoon for a checkup. Around 4:30 p.m., she was standing outside having a cigarette, waiting for a ride.

"I took a couple hits off it, put it out, and I had to pee," Mickey said.

Once inside, Mickey explained she fell and blacked out. Hours later she came to and realized she was in a bathroom, but she didn't know which one.

Mickey says her blood sugar was low, and she couldn't stand or walk.

"It was around 20 of 120," Mickey said. "The last thing that I remember was sliding on the floor. People were calling me, and I don't remember talking to half of them."

Those people were friends and family members, and they were worried. They called the sheriff's office and filed a missing persons report along with, as Mickey mentioned, called her several times.

Her step-daughter, Derenda Borham, started frantically driving up and down Cortez Avenue near the doctor's office looking for Mickey but was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Mickey says she popped three pieces of candy, which she thinks gave her the sugar needed to get to her feet.

Borham finally got through and her step-mother could only read words on the wall: one group said "FSA," and Borham called the sheriff's office and knew exactly where to go.

When paramedics arrived, Borham explained Mickey was crawling out of the doctor's office. She had unlocked the front door around 1 a.m., about eight hours after she went in to use the restroom.

Mickey was taken to a hospital to be checked out and will be okay.

Mickey says the doctor's office told her a cleaning crew usually checks the bathrooms each night, but that night it did not happen.

The doctor's office told both women they will check the bathrooms in the future to make sure this doesn't happen again.
