More hazardous materials found dumped in Suffolk County

Posted: Updated:

Suffolk County officials are now investigating illegal dumping at a second site in the county. Last week, tens of thousands of pounds of industrial waste was found dumped on what was supposed to be a new soccer field at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. Now, samples are being tested for contaminants to potentially identify a connection with the criminal investigation at nearby Central Islip Park.

More than two dozen bricks, construction material, and debris were discovered pouring out of a site at Route 111 and Sage Street onto both public and private property.

"It appears to us that some unscrupulous individuals believe that they can just go into the town of Islip and dump toxic and hazardous materials without any consequences at all," District Attorney Thomas Spota said. “We believe that the same individuals responsible for the dumping at Roberto Clemente Park are also responsible for the dumping at the 111 site."

Spota said the Central Islip property is owned by LC Real Estate Group. He said his office is currently locating individuals associated with the group for questioning. He also said he has questions about how the town of Islip handled complaints.

"It's certainly upsetting to hear that people are claiming that they made particular complaints to the town and heard nothing," he said, adding that he is also concerned that there are even more dumping sites in Islip that have not yet been located.

Preliminary testing revealed asbestos at the new site. Residents are concerned.

Spota said residents concerned about their health should contact either their doctor or the state’s Department of Health.

Fox 5 reached out to the town of Islip but had not heard back.
