Gunfire Erupts At Chester Housing Complex

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Pa. -

A barrage of gunfire at a Chester housing complex narrowly misses taking out a toddler.

The child’s mother says she found a bullet near her 2-year-old’s crib.

Some residents believe this happened during a robbery attempt and that some of the shots were fired in self-defense.

Some of the bullets went through one unit and nearly took out a family with two small children.

“I hurried up and grabbed my son off the bed, I was scared and I had to hurry up because I didn’t know what was going on," Nyia Robertson said.

Shaken up only begins to tell how Robertson felt after her two year old daughter and five year old son were nearly hit by a stray bullet at the Daniel Scott Commons.

She said she heard 15 gun shots at around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Some of those bullets pierced the siding of Robertson’s home.

“I moved the crib and there was a bullet, and a hole right on the floor. That could have been my kid. If it was daylight that could have been anybody’s child out here, like they just don’t care, they don’t care," she said.

Witnesses said the gunfire blew out both rear passenger windows on two vehicles.

“My daughter’s car is parked there, see the glass and that," said one resident who wanted to remain anonymous.

The windshield of a car belonging to Kamina Copeland also sports a brand new bullet hole.

“We were asleep right there on the couch and it woke us out of our sleep. It was really loud," Copeland said, "It’s crazy, I’m glad no one was out here and got hurt.”

The close call comes on Robertson’s son’s 5th birthday.

They’re now trying to turn the focus to cake and balloons, instead of bullet holes and fear.

“Yeah, we all were scared, we was crying. I’m still shaken up by it. It’s horrible, horrible," Robertson said.

Police were out at the complex investigating, but it’s unclear if they have any suspects in the case.
