Baby boom at the Lincoln Park Zoo

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The Lincoln Park Zoo is in the middle of a baby boom, and springtime is a good time to see all the little ones!

The most recent baby at the Lincoln Park Zoo is a baby klipspringer. She was born on March 30 and is still being bottle fed. The public voted and selected her name as "Asha" - which means hope.

Asha has not been out for display yet, but other springers can be seen climbing rocks in the exhibit.

The Lincoln Park Zoo also recently celebrated the birth of a male black rhino named King. King weighed in at 60 pounds when he was born in August. Now, he weights more than 800 pounds! He may be big, but he is still a baby and nursing.

Black rhinos are extremely endangered - scientists estimate there are only 5,000 left in the world due to poaching.

The zoo is also the home to a baby gorilla. Zoo experts say baby gorillas are very smart and very dependent on their mothers.

The Lincoln Park Zoo is free to visit and there is always a ton to see!

"If you come to the zoo, you see our baby gibbon who was born a few months ago as well as our kangaroo, Joey. We have a toucan that was born a few weeks ago. Around Memorial Day, it's a big-time as far as birds go. We have a lot of birds sitting on nests," the zoo's general curator said.
