DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police are investigating a burned-up vehicle to see if it is connected to a hit-and-run that happened on Detroit's west side Monday.

Camari Smith, 8, was struck Monday when a driver failed to stop at an ice cream truck's stop sign. She was getting an ice cream with a friend at the time.

Camari is at Children's Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Neighbors say after the accident the suspected vehicle returned home with front-end damage around 9 p.m. A short time later, neighbors say that vehicle was on fire.

Sources tell FOX 2 the vehicle's owner called the fire and police departments so he could make an insurance claim, but investigators soon realized the vehicle on fire was a white Dodge Charger. After the accident, police said they were looking for a silver or gray Dodge Charger.

The charred vehicle is now being processed for evidence.

Authorities are reminding everyone that any stop sign is enforceable by law, whether it's on a school bus, an ice cream truck or on a post in the ground.
