DETROIT (WJBK) - A married couple was shot while sitting at a traffic light in southwest Detroit early Wednesday morning. One of the victims told police they were randomly targeted, but now police believe there may be more to the story.

Joe Calderone is said to have been picking his wife, Nicole Bruzzese, up from work around 3:45 a.m. He told police they were heading home when they accidentally turned on a wrong street. Then, Calderone told police three Hispanic man in a Chevy Impala drove up and just started shooting when they were stopped at a light.

The couple was able to drive to a nearby gas station and call for help. Their injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Now, FOX 2 is learning this shooting may not have been random as previously suggested.

According to online records, Calderone has been in trouble with the law before. He served time in prison and is now a parole absconder. Apparently, he tried to hide that information. FOX 2's Taryn Asher learned when police interviewed him in the hospital Wednesday afternoon he told them his name was Nate Williams.

Police are still waiting to speak with his wife and look at surveillance video captured by neighboring business.
