Tim Skubick: Schauer gets one-two punch on Gov. Snyder

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich (WJBK) -- The Democratic challenger for governor landed a rare one-two punch on the noodle of the sitting governor last week as Mark Schauer exploited a drop-off in state revenue and scored a P.R. coup thanks to the GOP controlled senate and Twitter.

While Gov. Rick Snyder was shadow boxing with himself in the background on the minimum wage issue, steadfastly refusing to take a firm position on same, there was underdog Mark Schauer doing a victory lap on the senate floor just after the GOP senate approved "his" plan for a $9.20 wage boost for the lower working class.

His team circulated the documentation that Mr. Schauer indeed had earlier embraced a $9.25 and hour increase and a bi-partisan gaggle of R's and D's passed a bill just one nickel off the mark.

Mr. Schauer took it and ran with it.

Hold it.

Why in the heck did the GOP allow him on the floor in the first place?

Under the senate rules former members have "floor privileges" and the crafty former senator Mr. Schauer took advantage to score his noodle punch number two after he was tipped off the night before that this might happen.

Throughout the day his squad monitored the proceedings via Twitter and quickly changed his schedule sending him to the senate when it looked like this might happen.

His other punch came earlier in the day when he called out the governor for apparently allowing a $1.1 billion surplus to turn to mush i.e. a projected $600 million shortfall over the next two years.

The governor back peddled to deflect the flip-flop by blaming a change in federal tax policy.  Turns out one of his own tax policies was also part of the reason, but he never mentioned that. Nonetheless he asserted the "economy is good."

Mr. Schauer, handed this reversal on a silver platter, reasserted that it was the governor's stinky tax policies that were not working and the revenue drop off was proof positive, he told anybody who would listen.

All and all it was a good day for the challenger but now everybody boogies up to the island next week for an important business confab from which Mr. Schauer has been unceremoniously excluded. What does he do for an encore?
