(MyFoxBoston.com) -- They call her Sergeant Mom. A marine who's dedicated much of her life to America, and this weekend she's set to celebrate quite a milestone.
Sgt. Mom will turn 90 years old on Memorial Day. And on that day we've learned a flag will fly over the US Capitol in her honor. It's impossible to walk into Evelyn Moores room and not notice she's a marine. From her bedspread to her walls, there is marine memorabilia everywhere.
While she battles with Alzheimer’s her daughter says she still remembers everything about the corps and it keeps her going.
“It's the marine corps, she will be in the hospital and sing the marine corps hymn, when not feeling well she prays or sings the marine corps hymn,” her daughter said.
She has a singing bear that never leaves her side and sometimes she sings along or claps. Her daughter, Mary Alice, started a Facebook page for her mom and after that Sgt. Mom is what everyone calls her.
Thousands of letters, cards and gifts from veterans all over the world have piled in and now decorate her walls.
“She never believed she was beautiful. She never believed she was special, now she's believing it and she can understand it and that’s a gift,” Mary Alice said.
Now Sgt. Mom and her daughter read the cards one by one every day. Sgt. Mom even gets giddy when it's time to listen.
Women marines call her a pioneer and thank her for paving the way.
One of her fans said, “You have led the way for us that follow you and we will always be grateful may God bless you.”
She joined when she was 25 years old and as a lover of fashion she showed up to boot camp in high heels, but that quickly changed. After 5 years of service she got pregnant and tried to hide it for as long as her uniform would allow because back then if a woman got pregnant she had to leave. And she never wanted to leave.
“I've always had respect for her, but now it’s like I’m in awe. I mean she's so tough so strong still so beautiful,” Mary Alice said.
Sgt. Mom no doubt has her daughters love, but now she has recruited the hearts of thousands.
She may battle with Alzheimer’s, but this marine knows how to fight.
FOX 25 did some digging and according to the Women Marines Association, there are only 541 women marines that are 90 years old or older. On Memorial Day, the count will be 542.
