Skubick: New survey says Michiganders ready to spend on roads

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - What a difference a little snow makes.

A year ago when pollsters took the pulse of state residents on the issue of raising more revenue for the roads, there was no pulse only 30% said do it.

Now that number has doubled as motorists have suffered through one of the worse winters on the books and apparently they are ready to say “Uncle” on spending more to fix the pot-hole ravaged highways.

The recent MRG survey done for the Michigan Chamber of Commerce asked folks if they were willing to pop an extra ten bucks a month to do the work.

68% said yes. 31% opposed it. Along party lines, the Republicans are not nearly as eager, 59% favor the $10, while just over 70% of the independents and Democrats are on board.

Not only are these numbers driven by the snows, but now as chamber president Rick Studley suggests, “It’s personal.”

Question:  Did you sustain damage to your car last year?

Answer: 25% had oowies on their cars. And 27% had a close friend or relative with a damaged auto.  That’s one out of two of you out there.

In fact Mr. Studley and Tom Shields who briefed the media on the survey  were both headed to the repair shop this week to fix broken windshields.

Other findings.

You would expect that motorists would finger as the “bad guys” in all this the truckers.  But only 7% blamed them.

The anti-government crowd likes to belly-ache about mismanagement in the system. Only 9% agree with that notion.

And check this out, politicians certainly deserve, not a pat on the head, but a pat somewhere else, on their longitudinal negligence in not solving this problem.  But 7% take it out on them.

Now armed with this new data, we see this week that the senate GOP leader is at the head of the parade to raise some cash approaching over a billion dollars.

Now that the snow is not blowing, is there a risk that the 60% plus support for this now, will wane as memories fade and the reality of using more of you money for the roads, will mean less dollars for beer, vacations, and who knows what all?

The finish line in November's mid-term elections is just the start of the next race for the White House.
One set of elections ends in early November as another begins when presidential hopefuls cross the unofficial starting line in the 2016 race for the White House.
