Oak Creek Canyon fire at 75 percent containment

Posted: Updated:
SEDONA, Ariz. (AP) - The fire still smoldering in and around northern Arizona's Oak Creek Canyon is now 75 percent contained, up from 55 percent as of Thursday. Crews are working along the Slide Fire's perimeter while interior areas of the fire continue to smolder. There are now just over 500 firefighters and other personnel assigned to the fire. That's less than half of the peak staffing.

The 33.1-square-mile Slide Fire began May 20 near Slide Rock State Park in the scenic canyon between Sedona and Flagstaff.

It's believed to be human caused and remains under investigation.

An evacuation order for canyon residents and business orders was lifted Thursday, but use of Highway 89A in the fire area restricted Friday as utility crews moved poles and did other work to restore power.
