App snaps photos of alleged smartphone thief

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A bit of technology may help the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office track down a smartphone thief.

Deputies say a white man allegedly stole a victim's Samsung 4 phone while they were pumping gas at Texaco station on Causeway Boulevard in Riverview.

It happened May 23, and authorities still haven't found the man. However, through an app called "Lookout," the sheriff's office has released photos of the alleged suspect.

After failing to crack the victim's the phone, the app automatically snapped two photos of the man and forwarded them to the victim's email address.

He is bald, deputies say. When contacted by FOX 13, the sheriff's office said they did have any inclination about this suspect's location.

The Lookout app sends a one-time GPS location, which traced to a Tampa apartment complex, but a spokesman said the suspect could be anywhere at this point. A similar app for IOS, called Find My iPhone, actually tracks people.

If you have any information about this suspect's whereabouts, contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200.
