UAW elects Dennis Williams as 11th president

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The United Auto Workers elected a new president Wednesday, choosing current Secretary Treasurer Dennis Williams as its new leader.

Williams has already promised to fight for wage increases and more political clout here and around the world.

Delegates tell FOX 2's Ron Savage they are pleased with the voting.

"It went just the way I expected it. Dennis is the man. We're looking forward to him representing the UAW and taking over for [Bob] King. We got a big fight ahead of us.

Tracy Durant transferred to Naperville, Illinois where he works for Mopar. He says the number one challenge for the UAW is the Right to Work legislation.

"First of all we don't want that right to work that they're trying to push over there in Illinois as well as Wisconsin, passed over here in Michigan, because I worked here in Michigan before I went over there. That's a fight; we got to keep fighting them on off," he says.

There was no official ballot count declaring Dennis Williams as the new president. Just as soon as he gained enough votes to win, a roll call vote was suspended.

What's clear is Williams won by a large measure and seems to be a popular choice of the 1,100 delegates.

The Detroit UAW Convention this week had some controversy with delegates approving a 25 percent union dues hike.

Savage reports Williams will make his first speech at Cobo Thursday morning followed by some comments from Bob King, then James Hoffa with the Teamsters will speak.
