Local woman hopes to change attitude about diabetes

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A metro Detroit woman is looking to change the way we look at diabetes.

"If I had a dollar for every person who said, 'Wow, you don't look diabetic!' So, I've really been working hard to kind of get people to stop thinking that way about diabetes, like there's a certain way that a diabetic person looks," Sara Pomish says.

Eating right and exercising has been Pomish's focus since being diagnosed with gestational diabetes in 1993. Then, Pomish successfully battled breast cancer in 2011.

So, on the path to good health, she was shocked when her doctor told her she had diabetes.
"And she looked at my blood sugar and she started laughing, she goes, 'Well, I don't know what to tell you, diet and exercise?' and I just started laughing because I was already doing all of those things," Pomish says.

Diabetes is simply too much sugar building up in your blood. The hormone insulin is what you need to get the sugar to the right cells, but either the pancreas isn't making enough of it or the body isn't using it the right way.

Your heart, eyes and nerves can suffer. For Pomish, that's more daunting than cancer.
"When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I thought, 'You know what? I'll have surgery. I'll have treatment, and then, you know, given all the advances that have been made in breast cancer, I'll be done, hopefully forever.' Diabetes, once you have it there's a good chance you're going to have it for the rest of your life," Pomish says.

Now, Pomish is ready to pedal for her life. She's an ambassador for Tour de Cure, a cycling fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. She's raising money and hope.

"You have two choices when you're hit with a diagnosis of any disease that's essentially life threatening. And that is to either, you know, use it as a tool to make something better, whether its your own life or somebody else's life, or decide to go in the other direction and be depressed and let it have the wrong impact on your life," she says.

Tour de Cure is a bike race for any level of cyclist.

It is Saturday, June 7, at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor.
