Nothing jeopardizes Michigan's economic recovery more than our crumbling roads and bridges.

While temporary band-aids in the form of tar and cold patch have been applied here and there, there is no doubt the roads are worse now than ever.

We've seen many examples of bridges literally falling apart like this one on Merriman Road, where you can see exposed wiring.

State officials were forced to close a ramp connecting the Lodge freeway to I-75 over the Memorial Day weekend.

The state of our roads is at a crisis point - you can't talk to anyone without hearing a story about a flat tire or a bone-jarring driving episode. The cracks and craters have drivers bobbing and weaving all over the place.

Additionally, the importance of good roads reaches beyond inconvenience and the cost of car repair ... all the dilapidated bridges and highways jeopardize our ability to attract businesses that produce jobs and investment.

At the Mackinac Island policy conference last week, legislators debated many different proposals including increases in fuel taxes and vehicle registration fees.

We really need to ramp up the urgency level here - I support the 1.5 billion dollar transportation funding package put forward by Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville of Monroe.

His proposal includes increasing wholesale taxes on fuel and streamlining vehicle registration fees to focus on truly addressing our long term transportation funding deficit.

I believe adequate spending on our roads and bridges is a vital issue ... imperative to public safety, economic development and attracting a work force.

Let's encourage our state legislators to take advantage of this momentum and pass this road and bridge bill ... and do so quickly.
