Leslie Uggams reflects on career

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

After six decades in show business, New York's own Leslie Uggams is showing no signs of slowing down. Uggams stopped by the Fox 5 studios to talk about a new one-woman show appropriately titled "Classic Uggams," which debuts this weekend.

No conversation with this entertainment icon could happen without talking about her legendary career. She has won an Emmy, a Tony, and has multiple Golden Globe and Grammy nominations. Leslie Uggams became a household name when she played Kizzy in the critically acclaimed 1977 miniseries "Roots." The groundbreaking series broke barriers in Hollywood and beyond, as did Uggams herself.

She honed her skills at a time when the field was getting crowded with others also trying to make names for themselves.

Uggams weighed in on a few of her contemporaries: Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, and Aretha Franklin.

Uggams will soon take on the iconic role of mama rose in the Connecticut Repertory Theatre's production of "Gypsy" later this summer.

"Classic Uggams" opens at 54 Below Friday night.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
