Sunscreen Tips:

1. Consumer Reports are publishing an article to come out in July, to see whether sunscreens protect us to the level that they stated on the products.  They found that only 18 of the 20 sunscreens tested provided the SPF stated on their products.  Among lotions, the best-performing product was Coppertone’s Water Babies SPF 50. Walmart’s less-expensive Equate Ultra Protection SPF 50 was the second-best performer. BullFrog’s WaterArmor Sport InstaCool SPF 50-plus was the top performing spray, followed by Target’s Up & Up Sport SPF 50. Banana Boat Ultra Defense Max Skin Protect SPF 110 spray and Neutrogena Ultimate Sport SPF 70-plus lotion were the highest-performing products with ultra-high SPFs.

Continue to apply sunscreen, but please also rely on clothing, umbrellas, shade, hats to really feel confident you are getting adequate protection.

2. SPF 100 does NOT protect you twice as much as SPF 50.  Not true, in fact there is only an increase of 1% more protection!  Higher SPF usually means thicker, heavier sunscreen that people don’t like to apply.  Stick with SPF 15-30, remember to reapply every 2 hours or more often if you are in the water.  No sunscreen protects us from 100% of UV rays.

3. Babies and Kids do not need a special sunscreen.  The active ingredients are the same in sunscreens for kids and adults, so all members of the family can use the same sunscreen

4. Most of us use less than half of the amount of sunscreen that we should!  Half the amount means half the protection.  Try to imaging a shot glass size per application and for adequate protection it’s important to apply sunscreen 15-30 minuted before.

5. Spray sunscreen is best applied by spraying on the hand and rubbing into the skin, or  spraying on skin but also RUBBING IT IN.  Also remember that sprays are flammable so stay away from open flames especially until it has fully dried on the skin.
