The June Primaries; Filmmaking In The Community

Posted: Updated:

Today's program begins with an analysis of this week's primary election with Dr. Raphael Sonenshein, the Executive Director of the Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute of Public Affairs at CSU Los Angeles. This primary's low voter turnout meant a relatively small group of voters decided who the candidates will be in November's general election. The open primary rules used in this election effectively erased the importance of political party lines in some cases.

The result is run off elections that will have members of the same political parties running against each other. Dr. Sonenshein also talks about several other issues concerning the way Californians are exercsing their power at the polls. The website for the institute is www.patbrowninstitute.org.

Today's other guest is Laurie Kaufman, Executive Director of Public Interest Pictures, a Los Angeles-based film studio that focuses on making films that make viewers more aware of the world they live in. Next Sunday, PIP is sponsoring the Spark Change Film Festival in Hollywood. PIP is pairing independent film makers with community organizations to create public service announcements for television and other venues. For details about the festival, go to publicinterestpics.org.

This week we want to make a federal case for Joseph (1998) finding a forever family, so we obtained the necessary clearances to accompany Joseph to the Los Angeles Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). And during our friendly investigation, we found Joseph to be a dynamic teen with a good bit of focus and determination for someone his age.
