Cubs conclude second day of 2014 MLB Player Draft

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Cubs Friday completed the second day of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. They have selected 10 players.

With their third pick, the Cubs chose catcher Mark Zagunis out of Virginia Tech.

The 21-year-old right-hand batter this season hit .330 with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 39 RBI in 53 games for Virgnina Tech. It was his junior year. He was also named All-ACC Second Team for the second time in his career and was a 2014 Johnny Bench Award semifinalist.

With their fourth pick, the Cubs chose pitcher Carson Sands from North Florida Christian High School.

This past season, the 19-year-old left-hander was 11-1 with a 0.58 ERA and one complete game in 14 outings and 12 starts. He struck out 100 in 60.2 innings, which is good for an average of 14.8 strikeouts every 9 innings, while only walking 24. At the plate, the 19-year-old batted .361 with 12 RBI.

Sands also pitched for Team USA for three summers. He won a gold medal in 2012.

With their fifth pick, the Cubs chose pitcher Justin Steele from George County High School in Mississippi.

This past season, the 18-year-old left-hander was 5-1 with a 0.98 ERA in eight games for George County. He struck out 92 in 43 innings, which is good for an average of 19.3 strikeouts every 9 innings. He was also named 5A Player of the Year.
