ASU student sentenced in drug case

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona State University student will serve five months in prison for his role in a drug manufacturing operation near the Tempe campus.

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge handed down the sentence Wednesday to 20-year-old Kevin Kimes as part of a plea deal.

Kimes will also have two years of probation.

Kimes pleaded guilty last month to solicitation to commit dangerous drugs for sale and solicitation to possess chemicals and equipment to manufacture drugs.

Authorities say a Dec. 4 a traffic stop led to the discovery of the drug operation at a Tempe apartment.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say 30 pounds of material used in the manufacture of ecstasy were found along with a pill press that had a motor.

He was one of five people arrested.
