2 Injured In North Philadelphia Block Party Shooting

Posted: Updated:
Police say two men were shot during a Father's Day block party on the 3200 block of North Randolph Street in North Philadelphia on Sunday.

According to police, it happened right before 3:30 p.m. when an officer witnessed two people, shooting at each other. The officer opened fire, possibly hitting one the suspects, according to authorities. The other man, a companion of the alleged gunman, was not hurt.

The investigation is just beginning, but police say right now both men hit by gunfire may have been shot by police.

Tonight, the girlfriend of one of the men speaks only to Fox 29 and says the family wants answers about what happened.

Zuleika Lebron says her boyfriend and children's father 33-year-old Jose DeJesus was one of the men injured. She says he was shot 8 times, but is expected to be OK.

“Neck, cheek, body, but he good,” she said.

Lebron says DeJesus was walking with his brother and a companion when the brothers heard gunfire and started running. She claims they were not armed and were running from the sound of gunfire when they were shot.

When asked if there was any possibility they were firing weapons first, she said, “No, they told me they didn't have no weapons. Nothing like that. They told me cops shoot him.  Cause they were walking, when they heard shooting. They started running to a house, the cops started shooting them. They were running to save their lives.”

DeJesus' brother is in stable condition after being shot once in the arm.

Internal Affairs are investigating and police say they are interviewing any possible witnesses who may have seen what happened. Investigators say they'll talk with anyone who comes forward with information.

Crime Scene Investigators and uniformed officers spent much of Sunday canvassing the scene going door-to-door and scouring the area for clues.

“They wasn’t doing anything bad they was walking like normal people,” said Lebron.

Police are still investigating if the men's injuries we're caused by police gunfire they stress this investigation is very preliminary.

On Monday, authorities said that a Philadelphia Police officer remains on desk duty, after shooting his gun over the weekend.

One of the men is in critical condition. The other is in stable condition, and a third man is in police custody.
