3-year-old killed, ran out into oncoming traffic

Posted: Updated:
EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WJBK) - "You didn't hear no screeching, no hard hit, no boom, nothing like that," says a neighbor who wishes to remain anonymous.

But, she tells Fox 2's Robin Murdoch, what she did hear was screams afterwards.

It was those screams and the sight of a 3-year-old laying on the street that still has this neighbor shaken up. She doesn't want to show her face but she does want the little girl's family to know she cares.

"It's been bugging me. You see my eyes? I have been crying ever since," says the neighbor.

The woman was inside her home near 9 Mile Road and Almond Avenue in Eastpointe when she heard the commotion.

Her family was among those to call 911.

"It appears she was on the west side of the street with another relative. Her parent came out of the restaurant, was on the east side of the street and she ran across in front of the vehicle," says Eastpointe Police Deputy Chief Scott Bourgeois.

We're told the driver of a 2009 Saturn Vue who was turning onto Almond Avenue had little time to react.

Orange markings on the road are now a reminder of a toddler's life taken too soon.

"I've worked for All State as a bodily injury claims adjustor and handled a number of accidents. I had one fellow who hit a small child, and you live with that the rest of your life," says neighbor Walter Jakubiac.

Police tell Fox 2 the case remains under investigation but, so far, it appears the driver will not face any charges stemming from Saturday accident because it appears to have just been a horrible accident.
