Ticks and mosquitoes out in full force

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - The ticks and mosquitoes are out in full force, and they are a force to be reckoned with. Experts say the bugs have increased in numbers this year due to the harsh winter.

"Because of the moisture that we had in the spring when it thawed and there was so much extra rain and water and, especially where there was standing water, those are good places for mosquitoes to breed," says Mary Gerstenberger of MSU Extension.

And under all that snow was a great place for ticks to take off. They live at the base of trees so it actually protected them from the cold.

If you are going to be outside in a buggy area, it's recommended you wear long sleeved shirts and long pants tucked in at the ankle to avoid a tick trying to catch a ride. It's also a good idea to use a repellent with DEET. Experts say it's a huge deterrent.

Ticks can spread Lyme disease, a bacterial infection, while mosquitoes carry the West Nile Virus.

You can always bring a tick into a Michigan State University Extension office to have it tested for peace of mind.
