Social media clauses in pre-nups

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

We chat online, we post online, and we meet our potential soul mates online. But no matter how plugged in we are, there is no denying that the world of social media can make certain situations a little bit complicated. Things have come a long way since the romantic rumble of dial up internet brought Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan together in "You've Got Mail."

"The social media clause establishes boundaries to create some limits on what a couple can share, what they can post, and what they can tweet," says New York Attorney Ann Margaret Carrozza. She says more and more of her clients are requesting social media clauses in their pre- and post-nuptial agreements.

"At breakup it's critically important to build in some penalties for what an angry ex can post or tweet about you," she adds.

Toni and Gregg recently added a social media clause to what they call their love contract: pre-nup marriage and divorce settlement all in one. They say that if they were to break up down the road. they have a clear agreement: no hate posts, nothing that would harm the other person in any way. They say it's a good insurance policy. They say they think that social media clauses will be the norm.
