Police: 2 Killed In Crash On Rt. 13 In Del.

WILMINGTON, Del. - SkyFOX was over the scene of an accident involving a lawn mower in Wilmington, Delaware, Tuesday afternoon.

Delaware State Police say the crash was reported at around 1:48 p.m.  According to police, a Jeep Cherokee slammed into two vehicles on Route 13.

Police say the Jeep Cherokee veered off the highway, entering the Wilmington University property, where it struck a person riding a lawn mower.

State Police say the man riding the lawn mower, Francisco Jimenez-Flores, 20, of Wilmington, was ejected from the lawn mower. He was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Authorities revealed the driver of the Jeep was, Derek Wynn, 25, of New Castle, who was also transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.  Investigators have not determined if he died as result of injuries from the crash or if it was a sudden medical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Christiana Hospital where she was treated for a minor injury and released. The other driver was not injured.

Meanwhile, people at Wilmington University's campus are shocked.

"Every day he would come in he would have a smile on his face I never seen him mad or angry not one day," said Brenda Galloway.

Galloway serves lunch at the campus cafeteria. She says the man on the mower is a maintenance worker who ate at her station every day since last summer. Wilmington University officials have not confirmed whether the man was an employee.

“I was leaving to pick my daughter up from work, and I seen the accident that happened,” said Galloway.

“It’s very strange our hearts go out to the families anyone who was involved in this it’s just something that we could never have anticipated,” said Director of Public Relations for Wilmington University Laurie Bick.

Wilmington University says its campus is grateful to the first responders who quickly arrived to help.

Bick says the school feels lucky no students were walking in the area when the accident happened.

"I’m devastated it's someone you see every day you someone you talk to so you get to see his smile," said Galloway. "Every day you should take as a gift from god because you never know when it could end or something tragic could happen."
