Juvenile suspect back in court in Utash beating

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -- A teen charged with assault and ethnic intimidation in an attack on Steve Utash is returning to Juvenile Court for a hearing.

The 17-year-old, who is black, is one of five people charged with beating Steve Utash when he got out of his pickup truck to help a boy who was hit by his vehicle. Utash is white.

The other cases are being handled in Wayne County Circuit Court. But the teen was 16 at the time so his case is in Juvenile Court. He's due in court Wednesday.

Separately, Bruce Wimbush pleaded guilty to assault Monday in a plea deal with prosecutors.

"I have a little brother sir and when I saw the kid all I could see at the time was my little brother, and I got emotional and I let my anger take over me," 18-year-old Bruce Wimbush Jr. said in court Monday.

Utash spent days in a coma after the beating. He went home to Macomb County in May after six weeks in hospitals.
