US Rep. Roskam could be out of House leadership

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) - Illinois U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam may have lost his spot in House leadership after an unsuccessful bid to become majority whip.

The Wheaton Republican lost a vote Thursday to become the No. 3 man in the U.S. House.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') of Louisiana took the post with the backing of at least two other Illinois Republicans - Reps. Aaron Schock and John Shimkus.

Roskam is now the appointed deputy whip. But Scalise will likely choose someone for that position who supported him.

Roskam tried to overcome the GOP's desire for a red-state, southern conservative. Roskam's home state is reliably Democratic.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Illinois Reps. Rodney Davis and Randy Hultgren backed Roskam. Rep. Adam Kinzinger did not indicate how he voted.
