ACLU challenges Detroit's fireworks curfew

Posted: Updated:

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is urging the city of Detroit to not enforce their citywide 6 p.m. curfew for juveniles for the city's fireworks show on Monday June 23rd.

The ACLU argues the curfew is unconstitutional and criminalizes the innocent activities of young people in Detroit.

The city's curfew goes into effect at 6 p.m. for all people under the age of 18 who are unaccompanied by their parents.

The ACLU says in previous years, hundreds of young people have been rounded up on buses and issued criminal citations for curfew violations.
