Detroit police join in community crime walk to curb violence

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - You've seen the headlines countless times of murders, shootings and robberies. Now, Detroit police say they have a new strategy to stop the violence.

They say they're fed up and they're hitting the streets to raise awareness and to gather tips.

A prayer for peace and security was said as police got set to begin a block-by-block march against crime in northwest Detroit Friday evening. They say they're fed up and they're hitting the streets to raise awareness and to gather tips.

Fox 2's Ron Savage spoke with Detroit police Capt. Anthony Topp not long ago near the area where the march was taking place. Topp was emotionally torn up as he investigated a discovery inside a garage when a man's body was found dismembered.

The discovery was across the street from a public school.

"We met around the corner when that unfortunate scene came up with the mutilated body. When I looked to my left I saw the school; that just broke my heart. That was one of the things that really broke my back last week," says Topp.

He says he and other officers spoke with Chief James Craig and they all agreed they need to do everything they can to stem the violence.

"DPD is tired of this. We're tired of this crime; we're tired of this and we're not going to accept this as a way of life. I think a lot of us have been accepting certain things for too long and that's going to stop," Topp says.

Signs were carried during the community crime walk Friday night reading, "It's not called snitching, it's called living!"

The Detroit 300 walked with Detroit police and neighbors also joined in the sudden anti-crime crusade.

Topp says the march will make a difference because it encourages people who know something to speak out.

Many of the veteran officers and volunteers say they will march again in different areas of the city to interact with other residents.
