Dozens taken into custody for curfew violation at Ford Fireworks

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The Ford Fireworks show in Detroit is one of the biggest events of the summer, and Detroit police were prepared.

The city actively enforced a curfew that required all minors age 17 and under be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian from the hours of 6 p.m. on June 23 until 6 a.m. on June 24.

Police say 146 minors were found to be in violation of the curfew and were taken to Southwestern District. Minors were held there until picked up by a parent or guardian.  All have been picked up as of Tuesday morning.

Some parents were in favor of the curfew and appreciated the police effort but others thought the effort was unnecessary.

"All this time - what you're doing, okay, I understand that. But the time that they putting into today for the curfew? Do it every day, not just today. Stop some of the crime that's going on, all the killing that's going on. Stop some of that and bring that rating down," says parent Tameka Wilson.

"I mean, it's still light outside. I think they should be able to stay out a little bit later," said one person.

"I do agree with the curfew and I just wish parents just need to be on the children more, because, look at me. I'm down here getting mine," says Danielle Forts.

The long-standing curfew practice became all the more relevant this year after DPD got word gangs planned on initiating recruits by having them sucker punch spectators and officers at random in what's known as "the knock-out game."

More than 1,000 cops, deputies and agents flooded Hart Plaza, one of the most popular viewing spots for the fireworks.

However, officials who spoke with Fox 2's Randy Wimbley told him capacity at Hart Plaza was at only about 60 percent and that this year was one of the lightest crowds they've ever seen.
