DETROIT (WJBK) -- The driver of a DDOT bus was killed in an apparent accident on Detroit's east side Tuesday morning. Five passengers also received minor injuries.

Driver Gregory Cotton, 49, was driving his regular route around 6:30 a.m. when police say suddenly the bus began swerving to the left, drove onto the sidewalk and crashed into Sanders Dry Cleaners at E. Warren Avenue and Haverhill Street.

Fox 2's Roop Raj reported police sources indicated to him the driver may have been decapitated in the accident because of the impact into the building and the debris that came through the windshield.

Police say Cotton may have had a medical emergency. The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Dan Dirks, the director of DDOT, says Cotton was approaching his 13-year anniversary at DDOT and that he was a dedicated worker who always showed up on time with a smile on his face.
