Father of missing 12-year-old boy volunteers to take public lie detector test

DETROIT (WJBK) -- The father of a missing 12-year-old Detroit boy has volunteered to take a public lie detector test, after reports that the results of a test he took for the FBI were inconclusive.

Detroit police are still the search for 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell V who has not been seen since Monday, June 14.  In a press conference Wednesday, Chief James Craig said they are not currently investigating the disappearance as a homicide, but they have not ruled it out.

His father, Charles Bothuell IV, confirmed to FOX 2 that he took an FBI-administered lie detector test, but denied that the results were inconclusive, as other media outlets have reported.

"I'm making a standing offer to the media, you guys provide a lie detector test, you can make it public, I'll be there to take it," Bothuell IV said Wednesday.

A Detroit police task force with six cadaver dogs fanned out at the Martin Luther King Apartments at Lafayette and Chene streets in Detroit going door to door looking for any sign of the boy Tuesday.

Residents say they were questioned early Tuesday and were showed two pictures, and asked if they have seen the boy with another man.

"I told them I don't recognize the guy or the kid. So, he hasn't been around," says resident Margie Helms. "I'm just hoping when they find him that he's alive."

Investigators are focusing on this location because of a tip they received and the fact this was the last place young Charlie was seen.

A witness claims they saw him playing basketball but so far the search turned up nothing.

"I can only describe it as a living nightmare. We've had cadaver dogs in the house, bloodhounds searching for him, just police, FBI, just, everybody, just looking for our son and hearing nothing," says Monique Bothuell, Charlie's stepmother.

She says she's worried sick about about her stepson. Charlie left while he was in her care, upset she was going to tell his father he didn't finish his required workout.

He ran away a few years ago but was found a couple hours later. It's now been nearly two weeks.

Both parents have been questioned by police, angered by how they were treated. Monique says she refused to take a polygraph test.

"We've been more than open, honest and forthcoming, and I didn't trust that I would be treated fairly after being so open with them so my counsel told me, 'No,'" Monique says.

"I want the focus on finding my son and getting him home. I understand the parents are always going to be a suspect. He had a father and a [stereotypical] evil stepmother - none of that is true here. The only thing is true is that we love Charlie," says Charles Sr.
