Missing 12-year-old boy found alive in basement

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -- The 12-year-old boy who has not been seen for nearly two weeks has been found alive.

Police tell Fox 2 Charlie Bothuell was discovered in the basement of his family's town home.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig answered questions about the details of the discovery. He says Charlie was found hiding behind a barrier of sorts made up of a barrel and some boxes. Some food appeared to also be behind the barrier, but Charlie is said to have indicated to officials that he was hungry.

Charlie Bothuell's father also appeared at the scene where he answered questions from the media for several minutes.

Bothuell was last seen the evening of June 14 when he reportedly ran away from his home in the 1300 block of Nicolet. His family had told Fox 2 he has run away before but was only missing for a few hours in that instance.

Sightings of the boy had been reported to police, which prompted authorities to search the Martin Luther King Apartments at Lafayette and Chene streets in Detroit Tuesday night.

Charlie's father and stepmother have been questioned by police and told Fox 2's Taryn Asher they were angered by how they were treated. Monique Bothuell, Charlie's stepmother, says she refused to take a polygraph test. The child apparently went missing in her care, upset she was going to tell his father he didn't finish his required workout.

Charles Bothuell Sr. confirmed to FOX 2 that he took an FBI-administered lie detector test but denied that the results were inconclusive, as other media outlets have reported.

He had also volunteered to take a public lie detector test.

After being found, 12-year-old Charlie was taken to receive any medical care he might need. His father tells us he will see his son Thursday.
