Last Day Of School Postponed For NJ School Following Threat

Posted: Updated:

It was supposed to their last day, but now students at a South Jersey school have to come back tomorrow after a threat canceled classes on Wednesday.

In the meantime, the 8th graders of Northfield Community School graduated with tighter security on hand.

Parents agreed canceling class because of safety concerns was the right move.

But they're not all pleased that there's another day of school on Thursday.

"We have to go an extra day? Are you serious?" parent Phyllis Higbee wondered.

Normally a cap and gown signals the end of the school year, but that's not the case for the 8th graders and the rest of the students at Northfield Community School.

They'll be back Thursday.

"I think it's fine. Really it didn't bother me because everybody is safe and that's the most important thing because what's happening in the country now and the world, this is what we needed to do," parent Lisa Milhouse said.

The last day of school was postponed after some threats made by a 7th grade boy were discovered in a yearbook Tuesday night.

Police won't say what they were, but they stem from an ongoing feud among several classmates, prompting the shutdown as students started arriving.

"We evacuated the school. We brought bomb sniffing dogs in. Cleared the school, went over to the juveniles house, did a search there," Lt. Steve Steinecke of the Northfield Police Department said.

Heidi Toth worried graduation would also be rescheduled because her son Jeffrey was speaking at the commencement.

"I was kind of very upset that that would be cancelled and our relatives that were coming in to see wouldn't be able to attend tomorrow night if it got postponed," she said.

Instead, more police were on school grounds as the graduates and their families filed into the auditorium, trying to move past the morning scare.

"I was looking forward to coming to school today, but that didn't really happen with the whole threat and so forth, but I don't have a problem coming to school tomorrow either," student Romelo Handy said.

With so many snow days already added to the calendar, some parents are sick of waiting for summer vacation.

"We have family in town, it's graduation, we might cut school tomorrow," Higbee said.

At any rate, the last day Thursday will be a shorter one with classes letting out around 1 p.m.

At this time, police say the 7th grade boy is not facing charges, but will now see a counselor.
