CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was shot and killed inside a car that crashed in the River West neighborhood early Thursday.

Sonny Ortiz, 34, was discovered in the driver’s seat of a sedan that had crashed into a parked vehicle and light pole in the 1200 block of West Chicago Avenue at 12:20 a.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Police said the victim, a documented gang member, was parked when he was shot, then attempted to drive away and crashed.

Ortiz, who lived in the 3600 block of North Austin Avenue, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the back, and pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m., authorities said. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Kris Bailey, 36, said he lives in a residential building nearby and ran outside when he heard gunshots. When he came out, he saw a brown bumper on the ground and a light blue SUV speeding from the scene.
