White Horse Road Bridge Closed For Structural Repairs

Posted: Updated:
LINDENWOLD, N.J. -

The White Horse Road Bridge in Lindenwold, New Jersey, has been closed for emergency structural repairs.

The White Horse Road Bridge has been shut down because the overpass bridge, which goes over high speed line, was deemed unsafe by engineers on Thursday morning.

Fox 29 was actually able to see the gaping holes of rust and deterioration of the main girders below the underbelly of the bridge. The 50-year-old bridge is the overpass for the PATCO High Speed Line. A Somerdale police officer noticed where the bridge actually dropped about 6 inches. He notified county authorities who inspected the bridge and closed it immediately.

The bridge is owned by Camden County, and was inspected in October and was slated for repairs 2 weeks from now. However, after a very harsh winter of rock salt and anti-icing chemicals the bridge is paying the price.

"County engineers are closing the bridge due to structural concerns,"said Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. "We appreciate the patience and understanding of motorists for any inconvenience they may experience due to delays or detours posted during this emergency repair project."

The road and bridge will be closed for what Fox 29 is told an "extended period until engineers figure out whether it needs to be repaired or replaced.
