Michigan House to get new chairs

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -  Michigan taxpayers will spend $100,000 to buy new chairs for members of the Michigan House. Fox 2 political insider Tim Skubick reports it also looks like the governor's cousin may get the contract.

The governor's cousin owns DBI, an office furniture company, and earlier this year when he landed a state contract the Democrats accused the governor of favoritism, a charge the governor denies.

Now, DBI is one of six bids to supply 110 new chairs for members of the Michigan House at a potential cost of about $100,000.

Those who support the project point out the chairs are 24 years old and are not ergonomically designed.

Some lawmakers are happy with their old chairs and argue that money should go into fixing the roads.

The House business manager says he has a responsibility to preserve the capitol building and, in the long run, taxpayers will save money by purchasing the new chairs now rather than later.

House business manager Tim Bowlin is aware of the Democratic criticism about the governor's relative in the furniture business but if the final bid goes to DBI he says he can defend it as the best bid.

The governor has denied any wrong doing.

As for the old chairs, they could be gone by the end of the year.
