In-home caregiver in Tucson accused of stealing

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a woman working as an in-home caregiver in Tucson is accused of stealing $917,000 from an elderly client.

Tucson police 59-year-old Shirley Gonzales allegedly wrote 818 checks on the 70-year-old victim's account from 2007 to 2011. The victim has since died.

Police say Gonzales has been booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of one count each of forgery, theft from a vulnerable adult, misuse of power of attorney and fraud schemes and artifices.

The state Attorney General's office is reviewing the case and additional charges may be filed.

It was unclear Friday if Gonzales has a lawyer yet.

Police say they began their investigation in June 2011 when another caregiver noticed irregularities in the victim's finances and reported it to authorities.
