DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - It's a story you saw first on Fox 2. Dozens of cats, both living and dead, were removed from a Detroit home. Sunday, a vigil was held to urge the prosecutor to press charges.

Candlelight and cat lovers on Marne in Detroit where more than 100 cats were found dead and about 35 live animals were rescued. The cats all originally came to the Heaven Will Wait Animal Rescue founded by the homeowner, Diane. Volunteers say they were as shocked as anyone to learn about the hoarding and filthy conditions.

"It's been a roller coaster of emotions," said former volunteer Marcie Osmanagaj. "We've been feeling betrayed, disgusted, sad, angry. We don't know how it got this far."

The group released a lantern in memory of the cats and to thank volunteers who helped rescue the survivors. Police were called to the house by neighbors who reported a foul odor and thought there might be a human body inside the house. Instead, there were more than 100 dead animals.

"We're just haunted by the images and the animals we handed over to her," said former volunteer Cynthia Wagner. "We thought they were going to a good place and being cared for."

Now, the animal lovers are wondering how long this was going on. They're petitioning Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy to file animal cruelty charges against the woman they once called a friend.

"Out in public she preached providing good food, vaccinating your pets, getting your pets fixed, going and doing home visits making sure the animals were going to good homes," Osmanagaj said. "If you can pretend to be good and know the right thing to do, I don't know if it's a sickness or if it's just a demon."

The homeowner has been keeping a low profile since the cats were removed. A family member at the house last week said it would be boarded up and padlocked.
