An off-duty state trooper shot and killed herself in upstate New York, according to the New York State Police.

The body of Trooper Kerstin S. Williams, 27, was found near Nassau Lake in Rensselaer County on Sunday, June 29, 2014, police said.

An investigation at the scene did not turn up evident of foul play, police said. An autopsy performed Monday showed that Williams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. The weapon used was her police-issued firearm.

Williams was assigned to Troop F in Liberty. She had been with the State Police for a year and a half, police said.

"Trooper Williams always had a positive attitude and was eager to do a good job while on the road," Major Patrick Regan, commander of Troop F, said in a statement. "He was well-liked by both her peers and supervisors and showed the skill set and potential to have an outstanding career with the New York State Police."

Authorities did not elaborate if the shooting was accidental or a suicide.
