A man is accused of hatching a plan to steal frozen chickens and stashing them at a daycare in Wilmington, Delaware.

According to authorities, Ronald Johnson,49, of Wilmington, stole 72 pounds of frozen whole chicken from a delivery truck making a stop at a grocery store on Friday.

And it didn't end there.

Police say the man tried to stash the chickens at the entrance of Little Futures Academy Daycare, which sits right behind the store.

The workers alerted police and confronted Johnson, but he ran off.

Police say Johnson returned to the daycare for the chickens.

The son of the daycare worker followed the suspect while his mom alerted police, authorities say.

According to police, Johnson allegedly stabbed the son of the daycare worker with a steak knife, once on the back and hand. The victim also suffered a broken hand from a fall during the incident.

The victim spoke only with Fox 29.

"This basically is cut here its open and its broke here," the victim said.

The wounds under those bandages are from the steak knife.

Anthony Kinard,38, says he was attacked while he tried to protect his mother and the small children who attend her Wilmington daycare.

"He tried to keep an eye on him not to fight him, but to keep an eye on him until the police come,” said daycare owner Ertha Kinard. “A whole box a whole box of chicken they had not been cut up."

Ertha Kinard has run the daycare just behind the grocery store for 8 years. She says by far this is the most bizarre thing she's ever dealt with.

“Any son would defend their mom no matter what so that's what's going through my head,” she said.

Anthony stayed near the suspect while his mom kept the kids inside the daycare.

“It’s a very strange case people shoplifting happens all the time people stealing 72 pounds of chicken that's unusual,” said Wilmington Police Corporal Mark Ivey.

Ertha says she's grateful the armed suspect was not able to get much closer to the daycare because inside were kids ages 6 weeks to 12 years old.

“I have 42 children, and I’m fortunate none of them saw any of this,” said Ertha.

Police say Johnson faces theft, assault and resisting arrest charges.

The chickens were returned to the grocery store.
