Truck driver killed in hit-and-run along I-75 in Auburn Hills

(WJBK) -  They say a Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't, and Elizabeth Carter says that saying fits her husband to a tee.

"When he saw an accident on the road passing? His prayer, 'Oh Lord, God, please cover that brother or that sister right now in the name of Jesus. Come, give that family strength,'" she remembers.

Now, Ernest Carter's family could use those prayers after a hit-and-run driver killed him just before 5 a.m. Saturday in Auburn Hills.

"He told his wife, 'Let me call you back a little later. I'm going to check on the lights,' and we think at that time he was walking back or returning back from checking the tail lights of his trailer that weren't working, and he was struck by a car," says Auburn Hills Police Lt. Ryan Gagnon.

Ernest, a truck driver, was driving northbound on Interstate 75 to Bay City to make a delivery. He pulled over near Walton Boulevard and got out of his truck, possibly to check the tail light.

Police say he was walking near the fog line when the driver struck him.

The Carters want justice but say they are also extending forgiveness to the person who took a devoted husband, father and brother from them.

"My Ernest would want us to forgive him. Because he didn't know better. He didn't know better! We have to forgive him, that's the only way we could have peace," says Elizabeth.

Enough debris was left behind at the scene that police were able to determine the make and model of the car. They're on the lookout for a 2013 silver Ford Focus. It should have a decent amount of front end damage.

If you have any information you're asked to call Auburn Hills police.
