How to be patriotic by drinking real American beer

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Perhaps no beer company assembles a video montage of Americana quite like Budweiser does. But our King of Beers now bows down to Belgian ownership.

So if you want to drink truly American this Independence Day you might visit a guy like Tom Hays at his American Beer Distribution Company in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, a nearly 70-year-old family-run business founded just after World War II. It carries beer brewed from sea to shining sea.

From Hawaii to Maine over amber waves of grain to Breckenridge, Colorado, and its purple mountain majesties through Warrenville, Illinois, and down to Pennsylvania -- there we find Yuengling, our nation's oldest brewery.

21st Amendment's Brew Free or Die and Bitter American lead all brews we found in patriotic packaging.

PBR won a blue ribbon for something at some point in its 170-year history.

Anchor brewed its Liberty Ale to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere's ride.

But perhaps no beer comes closer to representing alcoholic eagle tears than Sam Adams Boston Lager. Named for a founding father, this brewery started the craft beer movement that allows our country today to call itself home to more breweries than any other.

Fellow founding father and the father of our country George Washington not only brewed his own beer, but one night in the winter of 1783 he drank beer at Fraunces Tavern on Pearl Street in Manhattan, toasting goodbye to his officers who served with him in the Continental Army.

But if you're not lucky enough to crush some brewskis in a building still echoing with the words of our first president, and if the taste of some of the beers we mentioned disagrees with you, fear not: You have the freedom to imbibe as you please.

Drink any beer brewed in this nation with ingredients grown in this nation by a company located in this nation and you've done your duty.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
