Greenfield Road repair in Southfield delayed

The start of the reconstruction of southbound Greenfield Road, from 8 Mile Road to just north of 9 Mile Road on the Southfield/Oak Park border, has been delayed slightly. The project, which was originally expected to start today (July 7), is now expected to start within the next two weeks.

Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) Managing Director Dennis Kolar explained the contract award process took slightly longer than anticipated. The contract was awarded July 2 to the Angelo Iafrate Construction Company of Warren.

Kolar noted the delay does not impact the completion date for the project. "We hope to start the project next week," Kolar said, "but there are factors, such as the weather, that are beyond our control and which could push the start to the following week."

During the project, the southbound lanes of this section of Greenfield will be closed, and southbound traffic will be shifted to the northbound side of the boulevard. Access will be maintained to Northland Mall, the businesses on the west side of Greenfield and Providence Hospital at all times, though some will be accessible via side streets while others will be accessible via gaps in the project.

The southbound lanes are expected to re-open to traffic by Oct. 31. The project involves complete pavement removal and replacement in the southbound lanes. The road will be reconstructed with concrete, including new curbs and gutters.

The project includes crosswalk upgrades to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements as well as the installation of a new City of Southfield water main.
