Brooklyn Center girl backed-over by family car, killed

Posted: Updated:
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (KMSP) - A 14-month-old girl in Brooklyn Center, Minn. died after her father accidentally backed over her with the family’s SUV in the driveway Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to the 5400 block of Colfax Avenue at about 3 p.m., where they found the child dead at the scene. Xeng Lor was grilling near the garage when he decided to move the family’s Honda SUV back just a little bit. Lor saw his two other children standing off to the side and assumed the girl was also a safe distance away.

Colfax is a quiet street in Brooklyn Center, and news of the accident is spreading in the neighborhood. It’s a reminder to make sure everything is clear before backing up, but right now, Brooklyn Center police believe it’s just a terrible accident.

Brooklyn Center police, the Hennepin County sheriff’s office and Minnesota State Patrol are investigating the death. The father is cooperating with police.

Tragedies like this happen far more often than you think. According to national safety group Kids and Cars, at least two children die and nearly 50 others are injured every week in "back over" accidents across the U.S. In Minnesota, there were 20 back-over deaths from 1990-2012, and 96 percent of these deaths involved children 5 or younger.
